About Taking Notes

Taking Notes is a public idea pad for the Love Has No Logic Design Group. We'll post our thoughts, revelations, ideas or unintelligible rantings regarding design, art, music and culture.

Taking Notes

quick site update 08.09 • written by Mike G.

While we’re still happy with the state of the (now not so) new website, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t a few tweaks that we’ve been meaning to make. Unfortunately, for the state of the site, things have been extremely busy around the office all summer and the site upgrades have been put on the back burner. Until tonight that is.

If you check out the portfolio section you’ll notice that we’ve tweaked the category navigation to make things a bit smoother and avoid unnecessary clutter on the screen. The old script we wrote simply allowed you to either open or close a section, showing the items contained in that section. Functional, sure, but if you clicked a couple sections open without closing any of them manually, then you had an unbearable list. That’s been a bothersome corner that was cut for the sake of getting the site done, but has been on the top of the fix list since launch.

The way we always imagined the navigation in our portfolio working was that when you clicked on a category, it would show only the items contained in that category. If you wanted to look at the web projects we’ve done, then you don’t need all our print and publishing work pushing it down the page. Since we launched the site we’ve been using the MooTools framework to display our work slideshow. It’s got some great built in features that achieve just this. The smooth motion is an additional effect that’s surely nice, but even without it, the functionality is exactly what we’ve wanted from the beginning. It’s a simple fix, but one that we think will add greatly to the section’s usability.

What’s the next task you ask? Bringing comments to the site, for sure.

When No Means Yes 09.16

Sometimes there are jobs that are so awesome that you’re willing to do almost anything to land them. That was my situation recently, but, even I have my limits, and they reside at the crossroads of “submit a proposal” and “on-spec”.

What We're Reading

Nice Translator

This is what I've been waiting for. No "language to language" options, just two steps, what language(s) do you want the result to be shown in, and, type in what needs to be translated. The site does the rest, and looks great doing it. (via abduzeedo)

The Designers Review of Books

Stumbled across this site yesterday, which isn't unexpected as it seems that EVERYONE has been linking to it. If the original set of reviews is any indication, this site is going to be LOADED with high quality content.

Fun With Light

A perfect excuse for removing your toys from their packages.

Pantone's Cube

I'd love to see this sitting up on my shelf. (Via Adam Varga)

In No Other Country…

Stunning poster from one admirable person about another.
