The challenge faced while designing the cover for the forthcoming book The Secrets of SOA went beyond the simple process of indicating the content of the book through eye-catching imagery. The entire theory of Service Oriented Architecture runs counter to the common server and development practices in the IT community. The design had to not only indicate the content of the book, but also show that Service Oriented Architecture was the answer to all of the problems that IT professionals currently confront with their implemented server and development methods.
The key was to begin with a strong image that illustrated the overwhelming nature of the technologies SOA is seeking to replace. An “IT Manager” in front of a daunting wall of computer displays was the perfect choice. The background was darkened and blurred as the point was to show SOA blazing right past. As Service Oriented Architecture is built around the interoperability of interchangeable applications, a graphic representation of those pieces was created as the basis for the central part of the image, which brings all of the confusion into focus and makes clear and simple the path ahead.
