When author Jason Van Orden approached us with the job of designing the cover of his forthcoming podcast promotion book we jumped at the opportunity. Avid podcasters ourselves, it the project allowed us to combine that world with our love of design, all while working with a close friend. Perfect situation if you ask me.
While looking at other books in the genre I saw a lot of clichés that we needed to avoid. We were determined to make no reference to earbuds, iPods, iPod advertising, iTunes, Apple Computers or silhouettes. The simple idea for the book was to show a mass of people who were ready and waiting to enjoy everything that your podcast offered. By reading the book and following its advice these people would soon become your loyal fans.
We teamed up with friend/photographer Jennifer McCharen who made the process of organizing and shooting almost 50 models in 6 hours run smoother than any photo shoot we had been a part of in the past. Once the photos were shot and composed, simple, contemporary typography was combined with graphic elements that are being used throughout the publisher’s podcast book series. The end result is a book that stands out in the sea of podcast promotion books and strongly reinforces the goal of the pages within.
