Passion Dance was a magazine based around the hardcore/emo music scene. The magazine was aimed at a younger audience, and one that is very design savvy (read: design exhausted). The key was to have a uniquely designed magazine that didn’t look as if it was interchangeable with the countless other zines in the genre.
For the masthead we used transfer lettering, and created our own ligature for the double ‘s’ in Passion. We also split the masthead and put it on the top and bottom of the page. The photo was an image that visually explained the name of the magazine.
For the opening spread of a feature on the band Forstella Ford we started with some letterpressed wood type. We originally proofed several typefaces, but as we were trying to choose which letters to use we saw a composition in the proof sheet that couldn’t be ignored. A live photo of the band was set as a full bleed background and we enhanced the edges of the text area by repeating the band name in Bickham script at various sizes. The body copy had all it’s letters sampled from various receipts we had laying around and was hand set.
