When Indie Street Radio were leaving the airwaves of WMXM in Lake Forest, IL, Eric and Nick got in touch and asked us to help bring their show to life in a new form on the web. We took everything we learned from working on podcasts in the formative years of the format and threw it directly at creating a lean home for Indie Street online.
The Indie Street site keeps things clean and simple, with a focus on the show itself. The problem with many podcasting websites is their over abundance of clutter. You’ve got show notes, playlists, social bookmarking buttons, flash players, download links, images, purchase links, etc. etc. We approached this site with the single goal of simplifying the front page to it’s barest minimum, in this case highlighting the most recent show while displaying summaries of the previous few shows as well. Each defines a clear way to listen to the show and offers a path to more detailed show notes. The site navigation is large, yet not over-powering, making it clear where to find out more about the show itself, news relating to the program and how to get in touch with Nick and Eric.
Once the functionality was mapped out we began pulling iconic 50’s-style clip art from our archives which matched the mood of the self-promotional flyers the duo made in their early years, and also set a nice theme harkening back to the golden age of radio. Keeping things in the 50’s, the site is entirely grayscale. The result: a site that is simple, clean and fun, but most importantly, stays out of the way and let’s the show speak for itself.
