Getting Started: Financial Advice For A Younger Generation is not your typical financial advice book. Geared towards readers ages 18-30, it is written to simply and cleverly illustrate the financial milestones that those in their 20’s find themselves confronting; From purchasing your first house, to getting married, having kids, understanding your 401k and planning early for your retirement. The main thing that sets this book apart is that it was written by someone at the tail end of the target age group, who has recently confronted all of these financial problems head on. The challenge put before us was to create a cover for a financial advice book that not only spoke to a younger generation, but also looked like it came from a younger generation as well.
The main title was hand lettered with the intent of bridging the gap between computer graphics and hand illustration. The graphics were created first by photocopying imagery, and then silk screening the resulting images using a home silkscreen kit. The final result is a book that easily sits on the bookshelf of a 22-year old artist while not being over the top, scaring away more conservative potential readers.
