Faultlines was a wonderful band from Iowa City made up of old friends of mine made through the random connections throughout the independent music community. Working with them on their debut album further illustrated the bonds found in tight knit communities. The band brought in a couple other friends to work on the illustrations for the album and our job was to take these two drawings and blend them into the final package. The drawing of the members by the van split in half very nicely, so it got wrapped wrapped from the front cover around the jewel case and onto the back. For the background I used a vellum scan to enhance the drawing effect. I also took a black and white version of the heart drawing from the inside and digitally watermarked it into the paper to add a very subtle texture to the paper. I repeated this on the inside.
For the tray card we used the Iowa state outline since the band is from Iowa City. The CD tells a story of being out on the road, traveling, and as such we completed the package by adding an overlay of the Iowa state atlas page we had at our disposal.
The typeface used for the CD was Mrs. Eaves. It’s a modern/classic hybrid that perfectly crossed the bridge between the artwork on the CD and the music the band was creating. There was extensive use of the alternate characters, ligatures and various weights that the family offers, and setting the type was approached as they do in the world of letterpress, hand setting it character by character.
