Death Ships Seeds of Devastation CD

Client
Death Ships
Illustrator
Luke Tweedy
Date
July 2006

Death Ships is the new band from former Faultlines frontman Dan Maloney. For their debut CD, Dan asked us to put together the packaging and design, and how could we resist. With an illustration from Luke Tweedy (who was responsible for the illustration on the Faultlines album) we knew that our job on this project would be an easy one indeed.

Originally the illustrations were supposed to sit on the front and back covers, but we thought that by placing the second image on the inside, rather than putting it on the back, it would highlight the before and after nature of the two drawings. The act of physically unwrapping and opening the CD would add user interaction and create a segment of time that would allow for the scene to change as it does. Further enhancing the idea of discovery, the musician credits were placed on the CD face, and when the CD is picked up out of the tray, that reveals the additional credits, those behind the scenes that brought the album to fruition.

Once the layout was complete a highly legible, geometric typeface was chosen to keep the focus on the strong images while still making it easy to find all the information you would need from the CD packaging. Finally, the barcode was incorporated on the spine of the CD. While barcodes are amongst the ugliest things forced upon packaging design, I feel that this was an elegant inclusion into the packaging and fits perfectly with the overall design.
