David Carson's Trek Postcard

A promotional postcard created for David Carson’s 4th book, Trek. This project was a difficult one since David Carson holds such an important place in the hearts and minds of designers. Whether it’s a good place or bad place depends on who you’re talking to, but the challenge is what drew me to this one.
I was originally going in a completely different direction until I fell asleep at my computer one night. The book fell to the ground and woke me up, and it was opened to the page that sets the background of the backside of the card. I decided that this would make the perfect background for a side of the card and changed my approach. Much as the book documents David’s path through life and design, this card would document my process of creating the card itself.
The image on the front is a photograph I took of my computer screen while working on the card. The image is one from the book that I originally intended to use as a full bleed image for the front. You can see in the background an IRC conversation I was having with a friend discussing David’s work while I was working on the project, though you won’t be able to read it. I overlaid my own handwriting on the front of the postcard. This is how I mark various proof prints as I am progressing along a project.
Finally, the quote on the back of the card. This is taken directly from the book and pays homage to David’s sense of typographic style. Finally, I added the 4-color registration marks as a nod at the contributions David has made to the world of print (and the death of the medium, heh) in his time as a designer.
