For Dakota/Dakota’s debut CD we wanted to visually represent the band’s combination of extremely artistic music wrapped around mathy beats. We started with a painting done by Ethan Hutchinson, but as we moved forward on the project it wasn’t quite working. Until I noticed a small corner that stuck out to me. This small detail in the artwork proved to be the perfect foundation.
A grid was created on the cover for the painting to fit into, a perfect visual representation of the band’s music, solid structure wrapping itself around the loosely creative. To further add to the feeling of mathiness in the band’s music, a scientific numbering scheme was used numbering the songs .001, .002, .003 and so on through .010.
The CD’s O Card (which is a printed piece that the entire jewel case slips into) repeats the artwork from the front and back covers, but in entirely wrapping the case in the artwork once again visually illustrates the band wrapping structure around their art (and it makes the CD drastically stand out amongst the racks and racks of CDs at the music store).
