In my final semester of undergraduate study I had the luxury of taking a handful of classes studying things I had been interested in, but hadn’t been able to fully explore due to various academic requirements (and lack of time). One of those courses was a class on woodblock printing.
For my suicide print project (a process where you cut your block and print it, then continue cutting the same block and print your next impression, etc.) I wanted to tie the process of cutting and printing with wood to the designing, planning and process of offset printing that is the foundation of graphic design. I planned out this series of 4 editions that would explore using each layer as a “plate” in the printing process and how the overall image changes as the inks themselves are swapped out.
As an abstract exploration I was unsure as to what the final result would be, however the final outcome was pleasantly surprising and from it I was able to walk away with a much greater understanding of the process, which is all that one can really ask for.
